      There are two ways to Identify a Malnourished Child

      1. Using the MUAC Tape: The MUAC (Mid-Upper Arm Circumference) is a quick and simple way to determine whether a child is malnourished using a simple coloured plastic strip (Download Link Below). MUAC is suitable to use on children from the age of 12 months up to 59 months. However, it can also be used for children over six months with length above 65 cm.

      Steps for taking the MUAC measurement of a child

      • Determine the mid-point between the elbow and the shoulder (acromion and olecranon)
      • Place the tape measure around the LEFT arm (the arm should be relaxed and should hang down the side of the body)
      • Measure the MUAC while ensuring that the tape neither pinches the arm nor is left loose
      • Read the measurement from the window of the tape or from the tape
      • Record the MUAC to the nearest 0.1 cm to 1mm
      • If using a 3-colour tape:
        1. A measurement in the green zone (More than 12.5 cm) means the child is properly nourished;
        2. A measurement in the yellow zone (More than 11.5 cm) means that the child is at risk of malnutrition
        3. A measurement in the red zone (Less than 11.5 cm) means that the child is acutely malnourished and kindly consult for medical advice

      2. WHO’s Poshan Calculator: The WHO’s Poshan Calculator (Click Below Link) in which one just need to fill Gender, Age, Weight, and Height details of a child and automatically you will know if the child Stunted, Wasted or Underweight. If the Child is in red category for any of the stages, then kindly consult for medical advice.

      Guide

      A Guide:

      • Visit every family and inform its members about Project SuPoshan and collect specific details from them about their children (0-5 years), adolescent girls and women in reproductive age.
      • Refer severely acute malnourishment cases (SAM) to nutrition rehab centers and enroll others in CMAM (Community Management of Acute Malnourishment) program.
      • Create awareness about the government schemes and services.
      • Be the point of contact for awareness and community mobilization.

      Educator

      An Educator:

      • Conducts group meetings and focus group discussions.
      • Provides individual counselling.
      • Conducts training sessions with globally accepted and locally relevant IEC (Information Education Communication) materials.
      • Creates awareness to accept and appreciate the services of Anganwadis.

      Guardian

      A Guardian:

      • Works with 3-4 Anganwadis, tending to an average of 3000 people.
      • Regularly monitors every child’s growth and updates her database.
      • Conducts HB screening for adolescent girls and women.
